6 Ways You Might be Doing Damage to Your Hair

On Friday, April 17th, 2015

Keeping hair soft and manageable is the key to beautiful looking hair. Sometimes it seems that no matter how hard you try you just can’t get your hair in a healthy condition.

What you may not know is that there are many things that could be causing additional damage to your hair. Here are 6 ways you might be causing hair damage and how you can prevent it:

Not Getting Trims

Don’t avoid your hairdresser for regular trims because you think your hair will get longer without getting trims. If you hair is damaged and you do not get dry, damaged ends trimmed off the split ends will only move further up your hair shaft and eventually break off making it even harder to gain length.

If you are worried about losing too much length during a trim find someone you trust and be very specific with what you expect.

Overuse of Chemicals

Is you hair chemically treated? Chemical treatments are one of the main culprits of hair damage. If you plan on coloring or chemically treating your hair go to a professional and make sure you aren’t over doing it. A professional hairdresser will be much more knowledgeable about chemical treatments that won’t damage your hair.

Using Too Much Heat in Styling

Heat styling on a regular basis will completely zap the moisture out of your hair. When using heat to style your hair, use styling tools that have temperature control and use the lowest heat setting that works for you. Also, try to skip blow drying your hair if you plan on following up with another hot tool. Let your hair air dry overnight and then style it in the morning. Also apply heat protectant products before using any hot tools.

Using the Wrong Products

Using the wrong products can worsen any existing damage. Many volumizing products tend to have a drying effect so make sure you always opt for moisturizing products. If you are worried about heavy conditioners weighing your hair down then choose one that has a light-weight texture.

Poor Diet

Your hair needs to be nourished just like the rest of your body.

To keep hair looking healthy and shiny, eat foods that are rich in healthy fats like avocado and fish. Click to Tweet Tip

You can also take supplements like biotin and fish oil capsules to add even more healthy fatty acids to your diet.

Not Protecting From the Elements

Just like your skin, your hair is susceptible to damage from environmental elements like pollution and UV rays. Wear a trendy hair wrap or large-brimmed hat if you plan on being outside for a long period of time. If you work outdoors you can even treat your hair with hair products that contain SPF.

Healthy hair isn’t hard to obtain when you are aware of all the factors that can cause hair damage. Keeping your hair hydrated is the key to repairing hair damage and keeping hair in great shape.
